Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) or Total Knee Replacement (TKR) is a common orthopedic surgery that involves replacing the articular surfaces (femoral condyles and tibial plateau) of the knee joint with smooth metal and highly cross-linked polyethylene plastic.

Causes :-
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Disabling osteoarthritis
  • Knee injury
  • Knee deformity
  • Gout
  • Hemophilia
  • Pain and loss of cartilage.

Diagnosis :-

  • X-Rays
  • MRI
  • CT scan

Risk Factor After Surgery :-

  • knee stiffness
  • General pain may occur for up to several weeks following a total knee replacement.
  • Swelling typically lasts for 2 to 3 weeks after surgery, but may persist for as long as 3 to 6 months.
  • Bruising may last for 1 to 2 weeks following surgery.

Post Surgical Physiotherapy :-
  • Ankle plantarflexion/dorsiflexion
  • Isometric knee extension
  • knee and hip flexion/extension
  • Straight leg raises
  • Isometric buttock contraction
  • Hip abduction/adduction
  • Bridging
  • Strengthening exercise
  • Balance and proprioception training.
